One of the most important functions of GAPA is advocacy. It is envisioned that highly visible spokesperson(s) will promote population based approaches to physical activity and the defined interests and goals of GAPA at relevant conferences, symposia and other relevant international and regional level fora (for example at European Commission meetings, World Health Assembly, at other global or regional meetings). Members of the GAPA steering group, GAPA work groups or closely aligned organisations would be engaged to perform these tasks proactively and reactively as required.
Capturing the interest, capacity, skills and resources of civil society and non-governmental organizations is important, particularly in influencing the behaviour of organizations and institutions that are involved in promoting physical activity. GAPA will support action in developing existing and new partnerships, noting that partnerships work best with at least 1-2 clear tasks in the first instance and shared goals. An appropriate program of work will be identified from initial contact with partners but may include preparing joint advocacy documents, convincer documents, shared statement of importance.
